Book Review: Betrayed Mate

  • by

Kindle Unlimited Read

“My fated mate betrayed me, leaving me broken and alone.”

With that heartbreaking opening, Betrayed Mate kicks off the Rejected Fate Trilogy with a tale of loss, a storm of betrayal and rejection, and survival. Centered around a once-promising bond between rival packs, the story explores what happens when fate—and your fated mate—lets you down. The premise has bite: a future second-in-command betrayed, her pack slaughtered, and survival hanging on a dangerous stranger cloaked in secrets.

As a longtime reader of Jen L. Grey’s work, I came in with high expectations, especially with a trope-heavy setup full of themes I typically enjoy. But while the story had a strong foundation, the execution left me with mixed feelings.

💙  What Worked

Compelling Premise & Familiar Tropes
This story starts strong with a powerful setup: betrayal by a fated mate, loss of her pack, a fight for survival, and a dangerous but alluring stranger named Ryker.

Readers who enjoy “who did this to you” energy, and enemies-to-lovers tension, and morally gray alphas will find plenty to chew on.

Slow Burn Romance
If you’re looking for instant chemistry but slow payoff, this fits into that category. Ryker isn’t a swoon-worthy hero from the start. He’s cold. Untrusting. Mysterious. But, that adds to the emotional push-pull.

💔  What Fell Short

Pacing & Cohesion
I’ve read and enjoyed other books by Jen L. Grey, but this one felt off. The pacing struggled—too fast in some places, too slow in others—and the plot wandered more than I expected. The emotional beats didn’t always land, and there was some reader confusion.

Shallow Character Development
The main character had depth potential, but I never fully connected with her. Ryker, though intriguing, came off more cold and cruel than layered. Their bond felt more told than earned.

✍️ Final Thoughts

Betrayed Mate wasn’t the page-turner I hoped for, but the bones of a strong story were there. If you enjoy shifter romances and emotionally charged slow-burns, this may be worth checking out—especially as it is available through Kindle Unlimited.

For me, it didn’t reach the level of Grey’s other works, but I’m still curious to see how the trilogy develops. Sometimes, book one is just the spark, and the fire comes later. I am hoping that’s the case here as well.

Live Your Lore—especially the parts where you heal from betrayal and learn to trust again.
