Book Review: Copper Lies

  • by

A Steampunk Adventure Begins

I was fortunate to be selected as an ARC reader for Copper Lies, and after diving into this adventurous tale of invention and consequence, I’m excited to share my thoughts. This debut novella from Alli Prince plunges readers into the heart of the steampunk genre, blending retro-futuristic technology with a 19th-century industrial aesthetic. Prince offers all the hallmark elements of steampunk—steam-powered machines and inventive designs—but also infuses the story with unique character-driven dilemmas and moral questions that elevate it beyond the genre’s typical bounds.

The Heart of the Story

At the center of Copper Lies is Lillian Booker, a young inventor caught between societal expectations and her own unrelenting curiosity. Her ambition and drive to uncover the mysteries of the glowing stones in her adoptive father’s workshop set the stage for the disaster that follows, as her mechanical dragon comes to life in unforeseen ways.
Through Lillian’s journey, the story explores themes of creation, responsibility, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. As Lillian secretly delves into their mystery, she inadvertently sets off a chain of events that threatens everything she holds dear. Her inner critic is a continual antagonist that she strives to overcome throughout the story, something I think all readers can relate to. Her quest for knowledge and independence creates a nuanced character who is both relatable and aspirational.

Engaging, But at a Slow Burn

The story’s pace starts off a bit slower than I expected, but as Lillian’s journey unfolds, the tension builds and the stakes grow. The slow start serves as a necessary buildup, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the world Prince has crafted. By the time the plot accelerates, it’s hard to put the novella down, as Lillian’s challenges become increasingly dire and thrilling.

Lillian: A Protagonist Worth Rooting For

Lillian is the kind of compelling protagonist YA readers will connect with—curious, intelligent, and determined. Her internal struggle between her scientific ambitions and the societal boundaries placed on her as a woman in a restrictive society adds complexity to her character. Prince skillfully weaves Lillian’s backstory and motivations, making her more than just the inventor. As the story progresses, we see her character evolve, from a curious inventor to someone grappling with the moral and emotional consequences of her actions.

The Twists and Turns

The final act of Copper Lies delivers a satisfying twist that keeps readers on their toes. Without giving too much away, the ending leaves room for reflection and sets up the possibility for future adventures. The unpredictable nature of the plot provides a nice payoff for readers who are invested in Lillian’s journey.

Final Thoughts

Copper Lies is a solid debut novella from Alli Prince. It may start a little slow, but once it hits its stride, the engaging characters, thrilling plot, and rich steampunk setting carry the story to an exciting conclusion. The writing style is straightforward, with moments of vivid description, and tension that kept me invested. Prince does a great job of establishing both the mechanical and emotional landscapes of the story. I’d recommend this novella to young readers who enjoy clean, coming-of-age, sci-fi stories. I’m looking forward to what Prince has in store next for readers—and for Lillian’s journey.
